Anna Maria van Schurman had become an honorary member of the Utrecht artists' guild in 1643, but was principally known for her intellectual achievements. The first woman to study at a Dutch university, she was famous for her knowledge of languages, history, poetry, the liberal arts, philosophy, medicine and theology, and for her piety.
