Joe ward was born Aug 1st 1928 in llanelli Wales. His father was Clifford Ward, a well known band leader in Wales.
As well as playing lead trumpet in the Joe Loss band for a number of years, he was a successful band leader in his won right. He was the band leader at the Queens ballroom Wolverhampton in the 60s, and the band leader at the Birmingham Top Rank in the 70's. He also led the band on many P&O cruises aboard the Canberra, Oriana, Himalaya and Arcadia. He was taught and ran Brass Bands in the Halesowen area for many years until his death , from bowel cancer, at the age of 84 on Feb 19th 2014

Joe was one of my cousins. He was 7 years older than me and I remember him as a very mischievous teenager when he, his mother and sister came to live in Lancaster for some time during WW2. He attended school at Lancaster Royal Grammar School and was a member of the ATC, playing cornet in their band, then played cornet in a local brass band.
I had a conversation with top sax man Johnny Roadhouse a few years ago, Johnny cited Joe as having a beautiful trumpet tone, not knowing until I told him that Joe and I were related.
He spent his National Service in the band of the Welsh Fusiliers, then was in Ray Martins BBC orchestra in Manchester for some time, where he met Johnny Roadhouse.
