Sir Ranulph Fiennes(1944-), Explorer
Sir Ranulph Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes, 3rd Bt
Sitter associated with 20 portraits
Fiennes grew up in South Africa before studying at Eton. He joined the Army in 1963 and served in the Cold War. In 1970 he received the Sultan's Bravery Medal and married Ginny Pepper. Their Transglobe Expedition saw them reach both Poles, cross the Antarctic and Arctic Oceans and circumnavigate the world by its polar axis. In 1984 he received the Polar Medal and in 1993 was made an OBE. Since his wife's death, he has used his expeditions to fundraise: in 2009 he raised £6.2m for Marie Curie as the oldest Briton to reach Everest's summit. At 71, he ran 250 km through the Sahara. In 2018, in his Global Reach Challenge, he aims to have crossed both polar caps and climbed the highest mountain on each continent.
