Arthur Chappell of Chappell & Co founded the Popular Concerts at St James’s Hall, London in 1859. The concerts were on Saturdays and Mondays. Despite their name, they were a serious classical chamber music series starring leading soloists of the day. When asked why he didn’t change the name or the content of the series, he said he preferred to change the public’s taste.
