Born in the Baltics, it was in Paris in the 1930s-1940s that Hoyningen-Huene's work as a photographer came to prominence. Influenced originally by the rich realism of Steichen's photographs, he made elaborate compositions in which the intellectual, fashionable and theatrical personalities of Paris, New York and London were seen in conjunction with classical columns, casts of horses' heads from the Parthenon, and giant plaster hands. In using vast surrealist blow-up backgrounds and bringing together incongruous objects, he was in many ways an innovator. He was the first to photograph fashion models from above lying on the floor with their clothes arranged to look like flying figures on a frieze.
