Charles Walter Stansby Williams

(1886-1945), Writer on literature and theology

Sitter in 3 portraits
Williams worked for the Oxford University Press in London from 1908, and moved with them to Oxford in 1939. Already acquainted with C.S. Lewis, Williams became an intimate of the Inklings. Lewis described him as being 'of humble origin (there are still traces of Cockney in his voice), ugly as a chimpanzee but so radiant (he emanates more love than any man I have ever known) that as soon as he begins talking he is transfigured and looks like an angel.' Poet, critic, teacher and visionary, he was the author of verse dramas, theological works, novels (including War in heaven and Descent into Hell) and the cycle of poems Talilessin through Logres.
