Napoléon, Prince Imperial

(1856-1879), Lieutenant; son of Napoléon III

Napoléon Eugène Louis Jean Joseph Bonaparte, Prince Imperial

Sitter in 30 portraits
The Prince Imperial was the only son of Napoleon III, Emperor of France, and his wife Eugénie. The Emperor was deposed in 1870 and the family were exiled to England. The Prince joined the British army and was permitted to attend the Anglo-Zulu war, only following the intercession of Queen Victoria. Eager to see action and scornful of attempts to ensure his safety, he led a scouting party deep into Zululand and was killed on 1 June 1879. His death ended any hope of the restoration of the Bonapartes to the French throne.
