The theologian and historian, Horace Pitt Kennedy Skipton, was born on August 18, 1861 in Leamington Priors, Warwickshire to Daniel Pitt Skipton, MRCS Eng (Surgeon) and Mary Georgina Hadow.
Skipton attended a boarding school at 6 Church Street, Aspley Guise, Bedfordshire with headmaster and curate, Charles Ewart Butler. He also studied at the City of London School.
Skipton joined the India Police Service between 1883-1899. According to the India List, Civil and Military for January 1888, Skipton was Director Superintendent of Police, 5th Class for Bilaspur, India.
In September 25, 1890 he married Jessie Goodwin in St. John the Evangelist, Upper St. Leonards, East Sussex. Horace and Jessie had two
children: Gertrude Frances Skipton (1891-1954) and Gervais Kennedy Skipton (1893-1935).
After leaving the Indian Police, Skipton returned to England and served in several high-ranking positions in the clergy. He was the editor of several publications relating to the art, church literature and history and Indian Affairs as well as the author of several books on the same subjects. He had written for the press both in England and India. He also contributed to several journals. He was the joint-editor of Electricity, 1898-1904; co-editor of The Churchwoman with G. M. Ireland Black - Burney 1899-1903; assistant editor of The Pilot, 1902; acting editor of Church Bells, 1906; on the staff of Guardian, Secretary of Indian Church Aid Association; and Editor of Indian Church Magazine.
Skipton authored such books as A little Gallery Hoppner, 1903; John Hoppner, 1905; A Song of the Celestial City, 1906; Our Reproach in India; A Hundred Years of the Church in India, 1914; and About Some Favourite Hymns. Manuscript entitled A Life of George Hills - First Bishop of British Columbia.
The Reverend Horace Pitt Kennedy-Skipton was priest-in-charge at St.
Philip’s Anglican Church in Reigate, Surrey from 1927 until his death in 1943.
Skipton died on February 16, 1943 at Surrey County Hospital in Redhill, Surrey.
