(1803-1889), Musician, writer and aeronaut

Early Victorian Portraits Catalogue Entry

Sitter in 1 portrait
After graduating from Trinity College Dublin, Mason spent several years abroad studying music and becoming one of the best flute players of the day. He was resident of Her Majesty's Theatre in 1832, and composed many operatic works. On 7 November 1836 Mason joined Charles Green and Robert Hollond on a balloon trip, which commenced in Vauxhall Gardens and ended, eighteen hours later in Weilburg in Nassau, Germany. An account of the journey was published by Mason in 1836, followed by an enlarged and illustrated version in 1838. Mason dedicated his later years to the study of theology and published several books on the subject between 1845 and 1878.
