(1822-1888), Poet, writer and inspector of schools

Sitter in 18 portraits
Poet and critic; son of Dr Thomas Arnold; first book of poems published 1849; inspector of schools from 1851; his Essays on Criticism, 1865, and Culture and Anarchy, 1869, in which he expounded his literary and social creed, were enormously influential.
