Anne Purkiss was born in Chemnitz, Germany and graduated from Leipzig University in 1983 with a degree in photography and journalism. She worked for an advertising agency before moving to England in 1984. After four years at the London bureau of Associated Press, she became a freelance photographer. Her commissions included regular work for government agencies, museums and galleries. Her work has been exhibited in England, Germany and Italy, and her photographs are held in a number of public collections such as the Royal Academy library, the archive of the Royal Society and the Yale Center for British Art.
