Born in Bishop Auckland, England, Raine read English at Exeter College, Oxford. His first collection The Onion, Memory was published in 1978 and was followed by A Martian Sends a Postcard Home (1979) and History: The Home Movie (1994). Raine's poetry is often autobiographical in subject matter, concerned with the lives and histories of family and friends. He was awarded a Cholmondeley Award in 1983 and was named Sunday Times Writer of the Year in 1998.
