Satyendra Prasanno Sinha, 1st Baron Sinha of Raipur

(1863-1928), Indian statesman

The first Indian to be elevated to the Peerage, Sinha took his seat in the Upper House in February 1919. Born in Bengal, he studied law in England at Lincoln's Inn. He became the first Indian to be appointed Permanent Advocate-General of Bengal, a member of Judicial Committee of Privy Council and a representative of India in the Imperial War Conference of 1917. He was a parliamentary under-secretary of state for India in 1919, Governor of Bihar and Orissa,1920-1 and a member of the judicial committee of the Privy Council in 1926.
