Sitter in 38 portraits
Born in Nottinghamshire and grew up in Suffolk Allenby failed Indian Civil Service entrance exams then chose an army career, joining a cavalry regiment in 1882 in South Africa. Between 1888 and 1890 in the role of captain he earned himself the nickname 'the Bull' for his temper, imposing presence and obsession with discipline and orders. In 1897 Allenby was promoted major and saw his first action whilst serving in the South African War (1899-1902). At the outbreak of the First World War he assumed command of the cavalry division; by the close he was the military commander of territory stretching from the Sudan to northern Syria, became special high commissioner for Egypt and was promoted field marshal in 1919.
