Mary Anderson (Mrs de Navarro)

Actress. Anderson was born in Sacramento, California and made her stage début in 1875 as 'Juliet' in Louisville, Kentucky. She debuted in New York City in 1877 and in London in 1883 to great popular success. Following a tour of Britain with W.S. Gilbert's Pygmalion and Galatea and Comedy and Tragedy, Anderson performed again in London in her own version of The Winter's Tale (1887). In 1890 she married Antonio Fernando de Navarro, a fellow American practising as a barrister in England and settled at Court Farm in Broadway, Worcestershire. Anderson published two volumes of autobiography, A Few Memories (1896) and A Few More Memories(1936).
