Campbell, or the Marquess of Lorne, was an MP from 1868 until 1878, where he worked as private secretary to his father, the Secretary of State for India. In 1870, he was one of five British aristocrats who were invited to Balmoral, where the Queen was seeking a British husband for her fourth daughter, Princess Louise. He and Louise were married in 1871. In 1878, Lorne was appointed Governor General of Canada, the office for which he is best remembered. He was successful in this role, improving relations between Victoria and the federal government in Ottawa. Louise accompanied him to Canada but in 1880 she returned home after an accident; Lorne resigned his post in 1883.
