Lady Astley was born into the aristocratic Delaval family and studied painting under the artist Arthur Pond from 1744 till 1750. Pond's portrait of Lady Astley is now in the National Portrait Gallery's collection. She painted a portrait of Jacob Astley, an ancestor of her husband, the politician Edward Astley's after a 17th century painting. Later she was commissioned to paint portraits of her siblings, including Anne Hussey Delaval. The family lived between 11 Downing Street and their country home in Northumberland.
