Sir Claude Auchinleck
(1884-1981), Field MarshalSitter in 24 portraits
Field-Marshal. As Commander-in-Chief, Middle East (1941-2) Auchinleck halted Rommel's advance on Cairo. He was appointed Commander-in-Chief, India (1943-7), and presided over the partition of the Indian army between India and Pakistan (1947).
