Regency Portraits Catalogue Entry

Sitter in 15 portraits
Ordained in 1756, Barrinton was made Bishop of Llandaff in 1769 and Bishop of Salisbury in 1782. In 1791 he was appointed Bishop of Durham. He was a supporter of the 1788 Proclamation Society, which aimed to create a new moral tone in society. In 1796 he helped found the Society for Bettering the Condition and Improving the Comforts of the Poor. As an advocate of William Wilberforce's causes Barrington committed himself energetically to the politician's agenda of philanthropy and moral reform. He joined and played an active role in almost fifty of Wilberforce's societies. Throughout his life he sustained an extraordinary level of public charity and private giving.
