Bayne was Censor (1863-97) and Curator of the Senior Common Room at Christ Church, Oxford. A 'stately, whiskered' man who, when 'not wearing academic dress, was always dressed in top hat and frock coat', Bayne was 'the very personification of Christ Church', where he kept residence for sixty years.
