Actor and theatre manager; joined Davenant's company, 1661, and was acclaimed in many leading roles in Shakespeare and Congreve; by royal command visited Paris to study new dramatic ideas; managed a series of theatres, including Vanbrugh's in the Haymarket, but lost all his money in unwise speculation, 1692; of impeccable character, he had a low voice and clumsy figure, but according to Pepys he was 'the best actor in the world'.
