Born in Hove near Brighton, from 1889 Bevan lived and worked abroad. He was influenced by French artists including Gauguin, whom he met while living at Pont-Aven, Brittany in 1893-4. After marrying the painter Stanislawa de Karlowska, he settled in London in 1900. He was introduced to the Fitzroy Street circle of artists by Spencer Gore and Harold Gilman who noticed his work in the Allied Artists' Association exhibition of 1908. He went on to become a founding member of the Camden Town Group. His main subjects included street scenes, horse-drawn cab yards and horse sales.
