Bone was part of an artistic dynasty, taught to paint by his father, the miniaturist Henry Bone, who worked for the royal family. He studied at the Royal Academy Schools and regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts between 1813 and 1841. Four of Bone's brothers, including Henry Pierce (1779-1855) and William (1792-1846) were also painters.
