Artist associated with 13 portraits
Ford Madox Brown studied in the Low Countries and Paris and, in 1845, visited Rome where he came under the influence of the German Nazarene painters. Between 1840 and the late 1850s he exhibited at the Royal Academy and was a founding partner and designer of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner and Co. (1861-74). A letter of admiration from Dante Gabriel Rossetti in 1848 led to his taking Rossetti as a pupil and the two became firm friends. Although never a member of the Brotherhood, Brown closely identified with their aims and produced paintings like The Last of England and Work according to Pre-Raphaelite principles.
