William Callow was a painter of landscapes, buildings and seascapes. He was articled at the age of eleven to the engraver Theodore Fielding. He went to Paris in 1829, where he worked under Newton Fielding, and later established himself there as a teacher. He was much influenced by the work of Thomas Shotter Boys. In 1831 he exhibited View of Richmond at the Salon, and as a result was appointed drawing master to the family of King Louis Philippe. Callow returned to London in 1841, and in 1838 was elected an associate of the Society of Painters in Watercolour. He became a full member of the Society ten years later and served as Secretary from 1866 to 1870. He exhibited about 1,400 works at the Society.
