Sitter in 20 portraits
Poet. Immensely popular in his own day, but now chiefly remembered for his war-songs, 'Hohenlinden' and 'Ye Mariners of England'. His diffidence led Walter Scott to write, 'He is afraid of the shadow that his own fame casts before him'.
