John Vaughan, 3rd Earl of Carbery

(1639-1713), Governor of Jamaica and courtier

Later Stuart Portraits Catalogue Entry

Sitter in 7 portraits
John Vaughan became a Member of Parliament after the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660. He was known for his love of the theatre and the pleasures of London society; Samuel Pepys described him as 'one of the lewdest fellows of the age'. In 1674 he was appointed governor of Jamaica, a crown colony that was dominated by plantations worked by enslaved Africans. Vaughan was an unpopular leader often coming into conflict over measures to stop piracy. Scandal plagued his time there with accusations that he had sold his Welsh servants, including his clergymen, into slavery. After his return from Jamaica in 1678, he joined the Kit-Cat Club and was made President of the Royal Society, founded in 1660 to promote scientific knowledge.
