Oliver Lyttelton, 1st Viscount Chandos
(1893-1972), Businessman and politician; MP for AldershotSitter in 26 portraits
In the 1920s and 1930s, Lyttelton worked for the British Metal Corporation, rising to become the firm's Managing Director. He was on the boards of several companies and was one of a few people who effectively controlled the global metal trade, an industry crucially important to the Second World War effort. Lyttelton entered Parliament as a Conservative MP in 1940. He joined Churchill's war cabinet as President of the Board of Trade, Minister of State in the Middle East and Minister of Production. After the Conservatives' 1951 election victory, he became Secretary of State for the Colonies. He continued in the House of Commons until 1954, when he was elevated to the House of Lords as Viscount Chandos.
