George Children

George Children was called to the bar in 1767, but never practised law. In 1776 he married Susanna Marshall Jordan. The following year she gave birth to their only son, John George Children, and died six days later. Children thereafter devoted himself to his son's upbringing and to local affairs. In 1792 with two friends he established the Tonbridge Bank. The bank collapsed in 1809, but until that time Children provided the money and facilities for his son's interests in science, especially in the new electrical discoveries after 1800. Children was declared bankrupt in 1816 and his home, Ferox Hall, was sold.
