Lionel Leonard Cohen, Baron Cohen
(1888-1973), JudgeSitter in 18 portraits
Trained in the law, Cohen was called to the Bar in 1913 and started practicing after World War I. He acquired a big practice in company law and became recognised in commercial circles as the leading expert in his subject. After the Second World War, Cohen was appointed a judge of the Chancery Division and was promoted to the Court of Appeal in 1946. He was made a life peer in 1951. Cohen chaired many Royal Commissions in the years following World War II, particularly in the areas of company law and compensation. In 1946, he was a member of the tribunal established to assess compensation for the assets vested in the National Coal Board on nationalisation.
