(1801-1874), Army officer and Liberal politician; MP for Perth and Elgin Burghs

Early Victorian Portraits Catalogue Entry

Sitter in 8 portraits
Fox Maule-Ramsay, 11th Earl of Dalhousie, was known as Fox Maule before 1852, as Lord Panmure between 1852 and 1860 and as Earl of Dalhousie after 1860. He served for a while in the Army, and then in 1835 entered the House of Commons as a Liberal MP. He served as Vice President of the Board of Trade and Secretary at War before being appointed to the new role of Secretary of State for War in 1835. His time in the War Office coincided with the concluding period of the Crimean War, and Panmure was much criticised for the government's handling of this conflict.
