Geoffrey Dawson
(1874-1944), Journalist; editor of The TimesSitter in 3 portraits
Dawson was editor of The Times from 1912 to 1919 and again in 1923-41. Prior to this, he worked in the Colonial Service under Lord Milner in South Africa where he was one of Milner's 'Kindergarten', a brotherhood of young men committed to South African unification and imperial rule. He remained in Johannesburg as editor of the Star (1905-10). He returned to England in 1911 where, as editor of The Times during two World Wars, he was pivotal in British politics. However, his advocacy for the appeasement of Germany before World War Two damaged the reputation of The Times.
