William Cavendish was a powerful landowner and a member of the Whig party, who were supporters of the Revolution of 1689 and opponents of absolutist monarchy. In the 1700s he held various government offices which he gave up when Queen Anne dismissed the Whig government. When George I became King in 1714 Cavendish rose to prominence again.
