Arthur Conan Doyle

(1859-1930), Novelist

Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle

Sitter in 6 portraits
The creator of Sherlock Holmes, one of literature's best-known detectives, Doyle began his career as an eye doctor. His first Holmes story, A Study in Scarlet, was published in 1887. The stories were so successful that Doyle gave up his medical practice in 1891 to write. By 1893, he had so tired of his famous detective that he killed him off in the Final Problem. However, due to popular demand he was revived a decade later; the last story was in 1927. Doyle dedicated himself to spiritualistic studies after his son Kingsley died from wounds incurred during World War I. Other publications include his memoirs Memories and Adventures (1924-30), Poems (1927), short stories and historical and supernatural novels.
