I possess a letter to the portrait painter F.R. Say from Henry Maxwell, Lord Farnham, dated 31 March 1847, concerning a painting about which I have no other information. The unattributed portrait in your collection (NPG D36658) was donated by Mrs Masterman, who gave the gallery some 20 engravings of portraits by Say in 1964, after the death of Say’s granddaughter, at the request of the family. It seems plausible, to say the least, that your engraving is after the portrait mentioned in Say’s letter. The style looks compatible with Say’s work.
Say was my great-great-grandfather and I have been studying his life and work for some years (see British Art Journal, 2011, Vol. XI, No. 3, pp. 74–82).
