Inheriting a fortune, Fellowes was a benefactor of Edinburgh and London University. He sponsored the radical journal The Examiner, and contributed to the opening of Regent's Park to the public. He abandoned his Anglican faith for a type of practical philanthropy which valued the latest scientific research.
