Sir (Henry) Bartle Edward Frere, 1st Bt
(1815-1884), Administrator in India and South AfricaSitter in 14 portraits
Having distinguished himself as an imperial administrator in India and Zanzibar, Bartle Frere was appointed Governor of the Cape Colony in 1877. He attempted to create a confederation of South Africa, whereby the British territories and Boer republics would be brought together as a single dominion. Believing a precondition for this policy to be the subjugation of Zululand, he ordered the invasion in 1879. The military disaster of Isandlwana and embarrassments such as the death of the French Prince Imperial dealt a permanent blow both to Frere's reputation and to his plans for confederation. His close friendship with the Prince of Wales could not prevent his humiliating recall in 1880.
