James Anthony Froude

(1818-1894), Historian and editor of 'Fraser's Magazine'

Sitter associated with 29 portraits
A fellow of Exeter College, Oxford, Froude was ordained deacon in 1845. Becoming increasingly frustrated with the views of the High Church, he published The Nemesis of Faith in 1849. The book caused a scandal and, at the college's request, he resigned his fellowship at Oxford. From then on, he mainly supported himself by writing. The first two volumes of his History of England from the Fall of Wolsey to the Defeat of the Spanish Armada appeared in 1856, and it was completed in 1870. He returned to Oxford in 1892 as Regius Professor of Modern History. Froude wrote a controversially frank biography of Thomas Carlyle, in which he made public his belief that the marriage was unconsummated.
