(1645-1712), Financier

Later Stuart Portraits Catalogue Entry

Sitter in 16 portraits
As a statesman and financier, Godolphin's expertise and loyalty were crucial to the Duke of Marlborough's success in the war against France. Appointed a Lord of the Treasury in 1679 and First Lord in 1684, he was made Lord High Treasurer on the accession of Queen Anne but was dismissed in 1710. A cautious, capable and flexible man, according to Charles II he was 'never in the way and never out of the way'.
