Gordon joined the British army as an ensign in 1805 and was promoted to lieutenant-colonel in 1813. He fought throughout the Spanish Peninsula Wars against Napoleon and became Wellington's chief aide-de-camp (personal assistant). He was made Knight Commander of the Bath in 1815. Gordon was mortally wounded on 18 June 1815. Wellington reputedly ordered him to be cared for in Wellington's own bed and wept when Gordon died, the next day.
