Sitter in 4 portraits
Diplomat. He was secretary and later chargé d'affaires (1723) for the English embassy in Paris, ambassador to Vienna (1730-48) and joint plenipotentiary for the peace conference at Aix-la-Chapelle (1748). Among other offices, he was Secretary of State for the southern department (1754-5) and joint Postmaster-General (1765-7). He was MP for Thirsk and Christchurch and was created Baron Grantham in 1761.
