Known as the 'Father of the Colonies' for his success in extending American commerce. President of the Board of Trade 1748-61, he aided the foundation of Nova Scotia, 1749, the town of Halifax being named after him. As a Secretary of State he was sued by Wilkes for his arrest under the general warrant against The North Briton.
