Sir John Harman
(1625?-1673), AdmiralSitter in 1 portrait
Sir John Harman was one of a breed of captains, who came to be called 'tarpaulins' and who had learnt their skills on the job, rather than by gaining commissions as gentleman officers. Harman served with great distinction in the Dutch wars of 1665-7 and again in 1672-4 where he was seriously wounded on both occasions.

He has an entry in DNB (1885-1900, v.24 p.410-1) which more or less copies the entry in Charnock's Biographia Navalis. I also note that the portrait's inscription (lower left) gives the date 1673, which - unless it was added later - dates the portrait, since he died in that year.
