Farrer Herschell, 1st Baron Herschell

(1837-1899), Lord Chancellor

Sitter in 15 portraits
A lawyer by training, in 1872 Herschell was made a Queen's Counsel. Two years later he entered the House of Commons as a Liberal MP. Although not a frequent speaker, he gained a reputation as a debater that brought him to the attention of Gladstone who made him Solicitor-General in 1880. His first chancellorship, in 1886, lasted barely six months, for in August of that year Gladstone's Home Rule Bill was rejected in the Commons and the administration fell. In 1892, when Gladstone returned to power, Herschell was again appointed Lord Chancellor.
