Lieutenant William Hobson was second-in-command on Leopold McClintock's expedition of 1859 to look for John Franklin's lost Arctic expedition, following the lead set by John Rae five years earlier. Hobson discovered the first piece of physical evidence relating to the fate of John Franklin's crew, the boats 'Erebus' and 'Terror', the so-called Victory Point note. See Ken McGoogan's book 'Fatal Passage' and Michael Palin's book 'Erebus' (pp. 255-58).
