Hollond, who studied law at Cambridge, to become a barrister in 1834, had begun to devote himself to the pursuit of ballooning from a young age. On 7 November 1836 he accompanied Charles Green and Thomas Monck Mason on a balloon voyage, which he financed, from Vauxhall Gardens to Weilburg in Nassau, Germany. The following year Hollond was elected MP for Hastings, a position he held until 1852.
