Born at Stirkoke and educated at Harrow School and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich; received a commission in the Royal Artillery and promoted captain in 1888; joined the cavalry division at Cape Colony on the outbreak of the South African War in 1899; took part in numerous operations during this war, including the relief of Kimerley and the battle of Diamond Hill; went to France as brigadier-general commanding the Royal Artillery under Sir Douglas Haig on the outbreak of the First World War; for his services in this war he was raised to the peerage as Baron Horne of Stirkoke and received the thanks of both houses of parliament. In 1920 he was appointed aide-de-camp general to George V.
