Pioneer and benefactor of the modern theatre repertory movement; subsidised the Abbey Theatre, Dublin (1904-10) and founded repertory theatre in Manchester (1907-21); her subsidy of a season at the Avenue Theatre in 1894 enabled the actress Florence Farr to commission a new play, Arms and the Man from the young aspiring playwright Bernard Shaw.
