James Dickson Innes

(1887-1914), Landscape painter

James Dickson Innes was a Welsh landscape painter who worked in both oils and watercolours. He studied at the Carmarthen School of Art and the Slade School of Art, and while still a student he began to exhibit his work at the New English Art Club. In 1908, Innes travelled to France with fellow artist John Fothergill. The trip had a lasting influence on Innes' work, but had to be cut short as he fell ill with tuberculosis. He subsequently spent some time painting with Augustus John in North Wales. His health declined, however, and he died at the age of twenty-seven.
