Justin McCarthy
(1830-1912), Irish nationalist and Liberal historian, novelist and politicianSitter in 14 portraits
Began his career as a journalist in Cork. He worked on the Liverpool Northern Daily Times before moving to London as parliamentary reporter to the Morning Star, of which he was editor from 1864 to 1868. On leaving the Morning Star he travelled to the United States, where he toured, visiting most of the then thirty-seven states. In 1871 he became a leader writer on the Liberal Daily News, where he was employed for the next twenty-three years. McCarthy entered parliament in 1879. He was in favour of Irish Home Rule and was Chairman of the Irish National Federation in 1891-2. He also established a reputation as a popular novelist, writing or co-writing more than fifty novels.
